The challenge

This e-commerce platform needed a visual refresh and a complete new user experience to simplify and improve the ordering process with customisable options, keeping in mind the various user types, from small businesses to large online retailers.

We worked on 3 different products at the same time:

  • the marketing and e-commerce website,

  • a customer portal for customers to manage their quotes and track their orders,

  • and an admin portal for the company to respond to quotes, manage orders, customers, products etc.

Creating the user journey flows

I started to define the various users and research their different pain points, understanding their needs and behaviours and mapping out their user journeys for different scenarios of the ordering process.

In this platform, a customer can either Add to cart and order instantly, or for more complex and customised orders, they can Request a quote. It was crucial to define precisely the user journey for these various scenarios, improving the user experience and the implications in the Admin portal.

The various users:

  • Small independent shop: they are still reviewing packaging suppliers and might just order a small sample pack to test the quality of the printed boxes

  • Small to medium size business: they need to order a set quantity of standard size boxes using their branded artwork

  • Large retailer: they need to buy in large quantities and have out-of-range box dimensions, requiring a completely customisable order

The different ordering processes:

Depending on the different users and each of their requirements (custom size, printing options, quantity etc.), the order process looks different each time. There are 8 different order scenarios, each with different outcomes for the checkout part, in the customer portal and in the admin portal.

Creating the sitemap and wireframes

After thoroughly defining the user journeys over the three distinct components of the project (website, customer portal, and admin portal), I set out to create the sitemaps for each of these components at the same time. This was to ensure that all requirements were integrated and aligned with our objectives.

Designing the user interface

The core visual elements for the website consist primarily of the product images: printed boxes from a variety of businesses, each with its own unique colours and distinct brand elements. As a result, the UI design of the website has to be understated and simple, ensuring it does not become overbearing or clash against the vivid imagery of the products displayed. This balance allows for a seamless user experience while highlighting the visual appeal of the featured products.
